“Tranquera De Loreto Bridge”
Several bridges were built over the Loreto Trench. Today, you can visit the old bridge just a few meters from Av. 9 de Julio (GPS: -27.5745914, -56.6715514).
In 1630, the Jesuits built a trench from the Paraná River’s shore to connect the river with the Iberá Wetlands Lagoon. This trench was called the “Loreto Trench.” Contrary to popular belief, this trench was not intended to drain water from the lagoon. Instead, it allowed the Paraná River’s floodwaters to reach the lagoon and raise its water level.
The Iberá Lagoon is the source of the Corriente River, which was used by small boats to transport timber and other goods to its mouth in the Paraná River near the town of Esquina.
Additionally, two more trenches were dug: one in Santa Tecla, a few kilometers upstream in the same area, and another in the town of San Miguel.
